“… Sometimes you just want a decadent, sugary treat.”

As parents, we all want our kids to eat healthy, nutritious meals.  I diligently serve vegetables to my kids and act excited about fruit as dessert.  But there are times when cantaloupe is not enough.  Sometimes you just want a decadent, sugary treat. This month I am indulging my sweet tooth and focusing on something all kids can agree on:  dessert!

CUPCAKE CRAZE

The oldest of Naples cupcakeries, Simply Cupcakes of Naples, is now in its fourth year. They do custom birthday, wedding and special occasion cakes, but you can stop by the shop and sample 8-10 different flavors daily.  Be sure to take a moment to sign the shop’s wall – kids can draw a picture, sign their name or comment on their favorite cupcake flavor. Check the web site for the flavor of the month and specialty flavors. Through November, you can sample the Pumpkin Spice cupcake.  For sugar-conscious cupcake lovers, Simply Cupcakes is working on low/no sugar cupcakes.

This fall, Gracie’s is offering a pumpkin cupcake to help you get in the fall spirit. Custom orders available.

Fall is in the air at Sassy Cakes, which is featuring Spice Pumpkin Dream and Apple Brown Butter cupcakes this season. They are also known for their red velvet cupcakes.  There are 5-6 flavors in-store per week; flavors are announced on the shop’s web site or Facebook page.  You can always order custom cupcakes from the complete menu of 15 flavors, including vegan and gluten-free cupcakes. Sugar-free cupcakes are also in the works.  Sassy Cakes elevates dog treats to a new level with “pupcakes,” cupcakes that keep canine dietary restrictions in mind by using ingredients such as honey and carob. Look for Sassy Cakes around town as well. Starting Nov. 7, they will be at the 3rd Street Farmer’s Market every Saturday and on Nov. 20, they will be at Osceola Elementary’s Fall Harvest Festival.

DONUT DELIGHT

BrickTops:  Mini-donuts served with three dipping sauces at brunch.

Café Lurcat: The signature dessert is served hot and covered in cinnamon and sugar.

MUFFIN MAVENS

Sunrise Café:  Enormous, homemade muffins fill the bakery case daily.

Straight from New York Bagels:  Just like in NYC, the muffins are displayed right in their tins.

PIE TIME

Randy’s Fishmarket:  Their Key Lime Pie is so famous that they ship it all over the country.

Perkins: There are fresh pies every day including my great-grandfather’s favorite, the hard-to-find Lemon Meringue

MISCELLANEOUS

California Pizza Kitchen: The Chocolate Soufflé Cake is perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

CiCi’s Pizza: Soft, fudgy and delicious brownies with powdered sugar on top.

Jason’s Deli’s: Offers free soft serve ice cream: did I mention that it’s FREE?

Food & Thought:  Delicious organic treats including raw, vegan and gluten-free.

Naples Flatbread & Wine Bar: Try their ‘smores:  no need for a campfire, you make them yourself at the table.

Randy’s Fishmarket: Though Randy’s is known for Key Lime Pie, the Chocolate Bread Pudding is one of the best I’ve ever had.  Bonus:  it’s enormous and enough for at least four people.

Whole Foods: Can’t decide what you’re in the mood for?  Try the dessert bar where you can have a little bit of everything!
